Choosing the best pair of sunglasses

Young people and celebrities are wearing them more and more these days as the “cool” accessory, but sunglasses actually play the very important role of protecting your eyes from the sun’s glare.

As the dry season in Rwanda brings more sunlight and fewer clouds, it becomes even more important to protect your eyes from the sun’s UV rays, which can cause damage to your eye as well as wrinkles around the eye area.

Here are some things to remember in order to find a pair of sunglasses that protects your eyes—and makes you look good!

Saving your eyes from the sun

Sunglasses may be fashionable, but their most important function is protecting your eyes from dangerous UV rays, which can burn and damage your eyes and eyelids. When you are shopping for sunglasses, make sure the label says that the glasses provide 99 to 100 per cent UV absorption.

Colour matters

Though dark brown sunglasses are the most common, sunglasses come in an array of colours, with each colour having a different function. Here are a few common ones:

  • GREY: Grey-tinted sunglasses don’t change the colour of the things you are seeing, so they are good for people who want to keep colours intact.
  • BLUE: Blue isn’t very common for sunglasses, and this may be because it doesn’t do a very good job of protecting your eyes. Blue tint makes it more difficult to see, and may produce more glare from the sun.
  • YELLOW: Yellow-tinted sunglasses actually make colours look brighter. Yellow also removes blue light in your surroundings, such as from computer screens and cars.
  • BROWN: Brown is the most common tint for sunglasses. This colour makes the world look a bit warmer and brighter. It is also helpful in determining whether objects are close or far away from you.

Picking the right shape for your face

Because sunglasses sit right on your face, they affect how you look. The right pair of sunglasses can flatter your facial features, but the wrong pair can make your face look chubby or too long.

What shape of sunglasses you should wear depends on the shape of your head.

Someone can have a square face, which means their jaw line is well-defined. They can also have a heart-shaped face, which means that they have a wider forehead and a small chin.

The sunglasses that look the best on these types of faces are round ones, like the ones Ciara wears below.

Someone can also have a round face, which means your face is about as wide as it is long.

Women with round faces look good in sunglasses that have angles, like the Wayfarer-style glasses worn by Rwandan celebrities Paccy, and Sandra Miraj

Though these tips are a good guide for choosing sunglasses, the most important thing to remember is that the best sunglasses are the ones that you love and that make you feel good!
