Rwanda : Stay fashionable even when you are broke

There are times when you feel it would be a nice thing to buy one of the trendy dress or shoes but you are doing badly financially. Fashion is a breeze when you have got money to blow but getting the trending item can get tricky when you are short on cash.

In Rwanda, there is variety of markets with different clothes and the choice depends on how heavy your pocket is.  Some clothing shops are expensive while others are cheap for instance second-hand clothes depending on the quality of the materials.

If you want to keep on shopping for your fashion updated wardrobe yet you are broke, here is how to look good for less in a material world.

Redefine the word sale

Sounds basic, but to really save a bundle on clothes you have to be willing to take advantage of promotions like 15percent off, gift with purchase and hold out for the hard-core sales like 40percent off, 50percent and up will land you a buy for almost what it cost the retailer.

Don’t stop buying

Indulge in a different activity that will reduce on your shopping desire. For instance satiate the fashion lover in you with a very small but different treat like a new pair of earrings.

Shop in season

Sure, stuff is cheaper when bought at the end of the season or even out of season. And that’s fine if you’re just looking for any old thing to wear. But if you love fashion you should shop as close to the season as possible. Otherwise you will just waste your money on trends that will be out of style by the time the next year rolls around.

Don’t stop buying, swap with pals

Friends that wear your size and share your taste are a gold mine. You can even go large scale and organize a swap meet where everyone can switch shoes, clothes, etc.

Get rid of your inner snob (pride)

Search for second-hand and discount stores. Buy basics from the warehouse or other places that sell in bulk or haunt second-hand clothes.

Become a do-it-yourself person

Learn to whip together a new outfit on the sewing machine or simply turn old jeans into a new skirt. Recycling is an easy update: a ruffle on last year’s skirt, a bow on the strappy sandals can be added on to a clothing to give it a different look.
